These bypass loppers are sharp, and have remained so after two seasons of tending to 14 fruit trees. They can easily cut branches larger than 1" thanks to the quality blade and long handles. These replaced some cheap hardware-store loppers that I had for 10 years. They don't fray the bark like the cheap tool, instead cutting cleanly. Yes, they're expensive. But a tool like this could easily last a decade or longer with care and occasional sharpening. Well worth the cost. The blade appears to be high-carbon steel, not stainless. This is excellent for holding an edge, but is not rust proof. So keep the blade out of water and/or clean and dry using an organic solvent like acetone or lacquer thinner if they need it.
